California Energy Commission and UL

The California Energy Commission (CEC) defines required energy efficiency levels that all products must meet in California.

In 2009, the California Energy Commission (CEC) announced that they would be changing some of the energy efficiency testing requirements for products sold within the state in the following categories:

• Clothes washers
• Clothes dryers
• Dishwashers
• Commercial cooking equipment
• Pool heaters
• Audio and Visual Products
• External power supplies
• Televisions
• Air Conditioners
• Heat Pumps
• Boilers
• Furnaces
• Heaters
• Ice makers
• Refrigerators and freezers
• Vending machines
• Water heaters
• Wine Chillers
• Compact Fluorescent Lamps
• Exit Signs
• Fluorescent lamps
• Incandescent lamps
• Luminaries and torchieres
• Traffic signals and pedestrian lights
• Electric motors
• Transformers

Manufacturers are now required to show compliance with the changes by having products tested and certified by an accredited laboratory.
