"LOOK FOR THE ULC MARK"

ULC and Smoke Alarms

ULC exists to be of service to inspection authorities, industry and consumers by supplying authoritative information on products and services. ULC investigations and Listings provide data with respect to the degree of hazard present, if any, and the ability of a product to perform its required protective function. Smoke alarms are just one of the many categories of products that bear the ULC label to symbolize the compliance to Canadian Safety Standards.

What Is It?

A Smoke Alarm combines smoke detection and alarm sounding together in one unit. It provides you with an early warning of abnormal amounts of smoke in your home.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Statistics show that fewer deaths or serious injury occur in households where smoke alarms are installed, and maintained.

Nuisance Alarms

Units can have a silence feature which can be switched to silence the alarm for 15 minutes if it is accidentally triggered by non-threatening sources (burnt toast, a neglected kettle, etc.). ULC conducts a wide variety of tests to reduce the potential for benign nuisance alarms.

Power Failure

Smoke Alarms can be purchased with a battery, or equivalent, which will keep the unit working during a temporary power failure.

Installation

Locate your smoke alarm as suggested in the Manufacturer's instruction manual supplied with the unit.

Testing

Smoke Alarms are provided with test features to allow regular testing of the unit. Manufacturers also supply instructions as to how to test their unit properly.

Maintenance

Keep your smoke alarm clean! Dust and grime may be affecting its operation. If your smoke alarm is more than ten years old, it may be better to replace it.
